From elegant estates and garden celebrations to vineyard sunsets and intimate gatherings, every wedding has its own little rhythm. And honestly, those little differences are one of my favorite parts.
planning tips for weddings in northern virginia
Give yourself a little breathing room. Your wedding day does not need to be packed from one minute to the next. A few extra minutes here and there can make a surprisingly big difference in how relaxed you feel, especially when we’re moving between portraits, family photos, and the celebration.
Pay attention to the light. Northern Virginia has some gorgeous places to get married, and I’m always watching for the good light. Sometimes that means planning a few minutes for portraits around sunset. Sometimes it means grabbing you for five minutes when I notice a beautiful patch of light during the day. I promise I’ll let you know when I see something worth stopping for.
Let your people be part of the story. Your wedding photographs should include more than just the two of you. Your mom seeing you for the first time. Your grandparents on the dance floor. The friends who have known you since college. Those are the photographs you’ll be glad we made years from now.
Don't overthink the camera. If you’re worried you’ll feel awkward in front of it, you are very much not alone. You don’t need to know what to do. I’ll guide you when you need it and give you room to just be together when you don’t.
Make room for the unexpected. Some of my favorite wedding photographs are the ones nobody planned. A huge laugh during portraits. A spontaneous hug after the ceremony. Your friends losing their minds on the dance floor. Leave a little room for those things to happen.
And please actually enjoy your wedding. I’ll make sure we get the photographs we need, but I never want you to look back and feel like you spent your whole day checking things off a photography list. You have people to hug, food to eat, a spouse to marry, and a dance floor to get on.
Northern Virginia weddings have this wonderful mix of elegance and warmth. There are historic estates with sweeping staircases, gardens filled with flowers, vineyards surrounded by rolling hills, and beautiful indoor spaces for celebrations when the weather has other plans.
But what makes these weddings memorable to me isn't just the setting.
It’s the way a bride's face changes when she sees her person waiting for her. It’s the grandparents who refuse to sit down. It’s the best friend who has been holding onto a story for years and finally gets a microphone. It’s the quiet five minutes when you both realize, “Oh my gosh, we're actually married.”
Those are the things I want your photographs to hold onto.
And because I’m based in Frederick, MD, Northern Virginia is close enough that I get to photograph this area often while still feeling connected to the places and people I love working with.
Indoor wedding venues throughout Northern Virginia can be just as beautiful, too. Candlelit ballrooms, historic homes, barns, conservatories, and elegant reception spaces all give us plenty to work with. I’m less concerned with making your day fit a certain photographic style and much more interested in seeing what makes your particular wedding yours.
